The National Flood Insurance Program

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, more commonly known as FEMA, has been working with insurance agencies across America to provide homeowners with quality flood insurance since 1968. This has been done through the National Flood Insurance Program or NFIP.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners states that the NFIP covers up to $250,000 of flood damage done to the structure of your home and up to $100,000 of flood damage done to personal possessions.

Though it is one of our more popular plans, the NFIP might not be the right fit for you. Our experienced agents will help you understand your options and find the plan to best protect you, your home, and your valuables.

At Texas Insurance Agency, we offer three main types of insurance: personal, business, and liability. Most plans, including home insurance, often do not include flood insurance.

The Insurance Information Institute ran a pool across the US and found that only 12% of US homeowners have flood insurance. The last major flood in Pearland occurred in June of 2001 during tropical storm Allison. This flooding damaged over 600 homes! By this national statistic, only 72 of those 600 families had flood insurance.

The average cost of flood damage is $40,000. Don’t wait for the next hurricane season or major flood, protect your investments today!

What Does Your Policy Cover?

It is important to know what your flood insurance policy covers. Most flood insurance policies will cover flood damage to foundations and support structures, HVAC systems, plumbing, electric systems, and carpeting.

Some policies also cover flood damage done to installed features like office bookcases and custom kitchen cabinetry as well. In some policies, 10% of your coverage can be applied towards a detached garage.

It is important to note that the NFIP does not cover damage from sinkholes or sewer backup. It also does not cover relocation costs or damage to detached property, such as cars.

What Most Policies Don’t Cover

Most policies do not cover damage caused by mold or mildew. Mold and mildew can begin growing within the first 48 hours of a surface becoming damp. This can lead to damage to your walls, roof, clothing, or furniture, but none of this damage is covered by most flood insurance plans.

Many policies do not cover flood damage done to currency, precious metals, or paper valuables. This can include stock certificates, gold or silver jewelry, or coin collections. You can purchase separate insurance policies for these items.

Damage to your outdoor property, including fences, landscaping, pools, and septic tanks is often not covered.

And finally, if your home is deemed uninhabitable, most policies will not cover your temporary living expenses.
